The last time there was a super blue moon in the sky, Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium was still under construction and the All Blacks had only won one World Cup.

Otago Museum director and astronomer Dr Ian Griffin said the moon was rarer than a blue moon, which happens about every two years.

The last super blue moon happened in 2009 and the next one would be in 2032.

A super blue moon was a combination of a blue moon and a super moon that made the moon appear 7% larger than usual, he said.

A blue moon is the second full moon to happen within a month and yesterday it perfectly aligned with the time when Earth was closest to the moon - 357,344km away.
