19th over - Mitch Starc continues18th over - Pat Cummins comes back into the attack

On the money straight away from Cummins, on the stumps, Rahane defends down the pitch and, again, the stumps complete the fielding at the non-strikers end.

Driven by Rahane square, fielded at point by Lyon.

Australia are asking for the ball to be looked at and, it's not going through the little device so we might get a change here.

FOUR! After that delay, Cummins drops a bit short and Rahane pounces on the length and hammers it to square leg for four.

BEATEN! Lovely ball, scrambled seam and Cummins has that nip back and almost cut Rahane in half.

Rahane leaves the next outside off.

A bit of shape away and Rahane leaves alone.

17th over - Mitch Starc comes back into the attack

FOUR! Positive stride from Kohli and the crowd erupts at an exquisite cover drive to a 141kph ball that was sent across the face of his bat.

He leaves the next one alone, a touch wider.

Leg side from Starc, Kohli clips to deep backward square leg for a single.

Rahane leaves outside off.

Rahane a little squared up there, the ball looking to be turned away to the leg side is, instead, fielded at mid off.

Leg side from Starc, a single to backward square leg the outcome off Rahane's hip.

I'm glad you're keeping tabs

Bart's order is looking good - one Cam Green wicket to go

- Mike

16th over - Cameron Green gets another

A no ball first up, a ball that Kohl defended well.

A single now for Kohli.

CLOSE! Rahane pushed forward and the ball clipped the inside portion of the bat and almost squeezed through and onto the stumps!

DRIVEN! Lovely shot from Rahane, leaning into the covers and getting three runs. Excellent cover drive.

(Getty Images)

Kohli drops and run for a single to short cover, good intent from the former Indian skipper.

Rahane defends outside off and wants to drop and run but doesn't make soft enough contact and Green is alert to it and on the loose ball like a flash.

Rahane now fends to mid on as Green strays straight.

15th over - Boland carries on

Why would you take the ball out his hand?

Kohli watches as the ball flies past the outside of off stump. Twice.

Kohli defends solidly to a ball that's angling in to the top of off stump.

Kohli drives straight down the pitch and is denied runs by the stumps as the ball deflects off them and to mid on. Perfect shot though from Kohli, who looks in good touch early on.

Kohli clips to backward square leg.

FOUR! Lovely shot from Rahane, who had a strike rate of 172.48 in this year's IPL, where he scored 326 runs for Chennai Super Kings. He also top scored for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy at an average of 57.63.

He clipped that up over the slip cordon for a one-bounce four.

Lovely.

14th over - one to come to the returning man, Ajinkya Rahane

Big innings for Rahane, the forgotten man of Indian batting.

He leaves the first outside off stump, swinging away.

Rahane is the skipper who led India to victory in 2021, only to be dropped from the side the following year, remember?

This is his 83rd Test and he would not be playing it if Shreyas Iyer was fit.

A bit match for Rahane.

BOWLED HIM! PUJARA GOES NOT OFFERING A SHOT!
(Getty Images)

Another Indian player has been Maxwelled!

(AP)

Pujara just left that, and watched as the ball skidded back in a touch off the seam and cannoned into off stump!

(Getty Images)

He goes for 14 and India are in trouble now at 3-50!

14th over - Cam Green to have another

Kohli leaves a 138kph delivery alone outside off.

He leaves the next too, this one at 141kph.

A hint of inswing, Green throws back his head as the ball deflects of Kohli's bat and away safely to short mid wicket.

Kohli clips off his pads for a single to backward square leg.

13th over - Boland will have another

A bit of late movement in from Boland to Pujara, who defends solidly.

More movement in, that time hitting the inside corner of Pujara's bat, thrusted forward at the pitch of the ball outside off stump for no run.

Pujara fends to midwicket but there is no run.

(Getty Images)

Good bouncer, Pujara ducked under it but held the bat up over his head, almost like a briefcase umbrella.

BEAUTY! Beaten outside off, a perfect delivery, moving away off the seam. That's a beauty.

A maiden for Boland as Pujara defends the last, his third from five overs, 1-7.

12th over - Cameron Green to have a bowl

I like this move, Green will get any variable bounce out of this pitch from a great height, so a nice idea from Cummins.

Pujara defends solidly into the off side for no run.

A touch leg side so Pujara looks to turn it to midwicket but there is no run.

Three slips in place, tightly packed, Pujara pushes to backward point for a single.

Kohli drops and pushes a run into the covers. Nice running from the Indian pairing.

FOUR! A magnificent square drive through deep point, great hands, a lovely shot on the the rising ball. Well played Pujara.

A single to midwicket at Green over-adjusts and the ball strays onto the Indian number 3's pads.

11th over - Boland bowls after tea

BEATEN! What a ball from Boland first after tea, Pujara had to flinch away from that and was so close to leaving his bat out to be edged.

Pujara jams the bat down on a ball outside off.

FOUR! Lovely from Pujara, he loves the ball on his toes and he clips it away through wide mid on for a boundary. Great shot from Pujara, who was so quick to leap on that minor mistake from Boland.

Leg side again and Pujara takes a single.

Again leg side, Kohli this time clips the ball to mid on but there is no run this time.

Just lost his line a bit there, Boland.

He found it again, outside off, Kohli pushes safely to point for no run.

What is the weather meant to be like?

Four and a half sessions into potentially a 15-session match, we're very well placed and I think it likely a result will be produced on the Sunday (5th day) afternoon - weather permitting of course.

- Old timer

It's actually meant to getting warmer over the next few days, so I doubt that we'll lose much, if any, time to weather over the next two days at least.

The Oval, bathed in sun.

How good does that look?

Ric statTea: India 2-37 (Pujara 3, Kohli 4)

Well, Australia were in control at lunch, they're definitely in control now.

Two quick wickets, both openers back in the sheds and Scott Boland with a brilliant first three overs in England.

Still a long way to go, but that's a superb start from the Aussies with the ball.

To Maxwell needs to be in the cricketing dictionary

HE'S MAXWELL'D HIM. GET IN!!!!!

- LW

If it's not already.

10th over - Cummins Kohli

A bouncer first up, Kohli gets under it very easily.

He has to defend again, Kohli, who will be thinking about easing and surviving through until tea and ensuring India loses no more wickets until that time.

Well left by Kohli outside off.

He defends one that's on a better line now.

Kohli leaves the last before tea.

9th over - Boland continues

Pujara defends as Boland maintains his metronomic line and length.

EDGED! Just short of gully! Lovely bowling from Boland! India under serious pressure.

Boland angles the ball in to Pujara there, and he jams the bat down and the ball squirts to mid on. No run.

(Getty Images)

Pujara leaves on length, the ball sailing over the stumps having angled in towards that line.

Photo ABC News

Runs, Boland goes a bit full, a bit straight and Pujara clips to midwicket for a couple.

That's the first runs he's conceded in 17 balls this Test.

Another dot ends the over.

8th over - Cummins

Pujara defends and the ball pops up and almost rolls back on to the stumps!

India under pressure, Their masses of fans silenced. This is top quality stuff.

Pujara fends that one into the leg side, bat pad would have been interested there, they run a single.

Kohli fronts up to Cummins.

FOUR! So close from Cummins! That ball hit the inside edge as Kohli tried to leave and flew down to the fine leg boundary, missing the stumps by a whisker.

Kohli leaves outside off.

7th over - Boland has two at Virat Kohli

Kohli defends the first two balls he faces as India faces a rebuild so early in their innings.
