Australia vs England

England take on co-hosts Australia in the 2023 Women’s World Cup semi-finals, aiming to making their first appearance in the final.

Sarina Wiegman’s side are preparing to face a cauldron of noise at Stadium Australia in Sydney, with the majority of the crowd willing them to fail.

The Lionesses have made solid, if rather unspectacular progress in the competition, topping a group containing Haiti, Denmark and China with relative ease, before tense wins over Nigeria and Colombia in the last 16 and quarter-finals respectively.

That followed a 2-0 win against Denmark in the last 16, after also topping their group above Nigeria, Canada and Republic of Ireland.

The two sides have already met this year after a goal each from Sam Kerr and Charlotte Grant ended England’s 30-match unbeaten run in April’s friendly at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium, as the Matildas won 2-0.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of England's semi-final clash with Australia.

'England known for reaching the semis'- Bronze

There was fighting talk from Lucy Bronze after The Lionesses reached the semi-finals for a third consecutive World Cup.

Defeats to Japan and eventual winners, the USA in 2015 and 2019 respectively mean Wiegman’s side will be hoping to exorcise a few demons and reach the final for the first time.

However, Bronze was certainly in an upbeat mood when previewing the match, and is delighted to have proved people wrong.

She said: "People said England were the team that were going to flop.

"If we hadn't have got to the semi-finals, I would have said we would have underperformed. Our performances haven't been our best, granted, but the results have been there.

"We've got to the semi-final, which is what this England team is known for doing.

"We got past the hurdle last year in the Euros and finally made it to the final. We got past that dreaded [feeling of] always being beat in the semi-finals so we've got that in the locker.

"Many players in the squad were part of that so we know how difficult it is to get this far and also how to get to the final and to win games.

"We are the only team to be in three consecutive World Cup semi-finals at the minute, which obviously puts us in good stead.

"We know what we're facing for the next game. It's going to be another feisty affair, which we're looking forward to."
