A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for regions across the North Island.
On Monday night, MetService put out the notice to those in Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island and Coromandel Peninsula.
"An active front is moving southwards across central and northern parts of Northland tonight, and onto Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula later tonight and overnight," the weather agency said.
"There is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms with this front, especially about coastal areas, with localised downpours of 25 to 40mm/h possible. There is also a chance of a small coastal tornado."

However, MetService also noted that rain and thunderstorms were expected to ease over Northland from the north from Monday night.
Meanwhile, a heavy rain watch is also in place for Auckland and Great Barrier Island.
MetService said heavy rain in these areas "may approach warning criteria", with thunderstorms and localised downpours also possible.
