Last week, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) asked for the public’s help because of a “severe space challenge” caused by a surge in dogs and cats arriving at its shelters. Over the weekend, it offered a special discount rate on adoptions of all dogs and cats six months or older, and 135 pets were adopted. Unfortunately, the space problem still exists, because while those adoptions were happening, 132 more pets arrived at ARL.

The shelter has extended its Red, White and Boops adoption special through Sunday July 7. All dogs and cats six months and older will be available for adoption for $35.

“All our dogs and cats are already spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, plus adopters receive discounts on ARL training classes and in our Animal House store,” ARL said.

Anyone interested can view all the pets available for adoption on ARL’s site.

ARL is the state’s largest nonprofit shelter, and provides all the shelter services for Des Moines and some of the other smaller cities in Polk County.

In addition to finding permanent homes for its dogs and cats, ARL is still seeking volunteers will to foster them. More information about fostering pets is on ARL’s site.

The nonprofit also suggests other ways people can support its work, and help the animals it is caring for. Direct financial contributions can be made online, but other contributions are also welcome.

ARL has an Amazon wish list of needed items, and another wish list on Chewy. Donated items can also be dropped off in person.

ARL posted a list of the most needed items for the dogs in the shelter on its Facebook page.

BIGGEST NEEDS: Canned pumpkin, whipped cream (in cans), and hot dogs OTHER BIG NEEDS: Easy Cheese, peanut butter (no xylitol, please), and Nylabones (large and XL)

Donated items can be dropped off ARL’s main shelter in Des Moines at 5452 NE 22nd Street. The shelter’s hours are noon to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
