Reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has finished tenth in his second NASCAR race.

The New Zealander started Monday morning's race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from eighth on the grid.

The race was run primarily inside the famous oval.

The 36-year-old won in his NASCAR debut last month on the streets of Chicago.

Monday's race was won by Michael McDowell, the 2021 Daytona 500 winner, who led more than half of the 82-lap event for Front Row Motorsports Ford.

The win seals a spot in the NASCAR playoffs for McDowell.

Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott was second.

"Oh man, this is a dream come true. I'm just so thankful for everybody at Front Row Motorsports and [owner] Bob Jenkins," said McDowell.

"Man, we had a fast Ford Mustang today. We had the fastest car... to put on a performance like that, I don't know if it was dominant, but it felt pretty dominant to me."

Van Gisbergen's Trackhouse Racing teammate Daniel Suarez was third.

Three-time Supercars champion van Gisbergen was in the top 10 all race and briefly led on lap 51 before pitting.

Van Gisbergen will now return to Australia for the OTR SuperSprint in South Australia on 18-20 August.
