Speaking to The Telegraph, a palace source said the King’s planned attendance was a ‘sign of things heading in the right direction’. It's an indication that Charles is determined to look forward, beyond his cancer treatment, to get back to royal duties. The monarch hasn’t appeared in public for two months after he was first diagnosed with cancer in January. His nephew Peter Philips previously gave an insight into the King's mentality during an interview with Sky News. He described his uncle as ‘hugely frustrated’ by the slowing of his royal engagements, saying he was ‘pragmatic’ but annoyed ‘he can’t get on and do everything that he wants to be able to do’. However today indicates a step towards a return to royal engagements for the monarch.

Easter Sunday is an annual highlight in the royal calendar, with members of the family putting on a typically stylish display each and every year. In previous years, both working and non-working members of the royal family have attended the event, including The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and their family, The Duke of York and his two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and Princess Anne and her children, Peter Philips and Zara Tindall.

However this year may see a smaller turnout than normal - but it is still likely to be a glamorous and joyful event, with the family coming together amidst the health battles faced by the King, Kate Middleton and Sarah Ferguson.

The Telegraph reports it will be a much smaller group than usual at church today. The Prince and Princess of Wales will not be joining the rest of the royal family at church on Easter Sunday, as they have done in previous years. Instead, they will spend time with their children as Kate continues her treatment for cancer.
